When using this technology, automated downhole equipment is used that provides continuous collection and transmission to the surface of data on the parameters of production or fluid injection into the reservoir in real time. Smart wells technology allows real-time separate recording of production for individual reservoirs - development targets, as well as control of water injection through reservoirs in injection wells.

Conventional well assemblies do not provide this capability: additional work must be done in the well to determine which formations are inflowing from or in which intervals water is being injected. And in order to change the inflow or injection profile, a complex of expensive repairs is also carried out. Moreover, the smart well technology is attractive from the point of view of the economics and ecology of the project, since its implementation reduces the number of well clusters and the volume of infield infrastructure construction, and also complies with the requirements of legislation in the field of subsoil protection.
